Homam (or homa) is a sacred Vedic fire ritual in Hinduism, where offerings—such as ghee, grains, or seeds—are made directly into a consecrated fire to invoke deities, purify the environment, and gain spiritual or material benefits. It acts as a votive ritual, translating as a “votive offering” or “sacrifice” to cleanse sins and promote well-being.
Purpose: It is used to purify the environment, calm the mind, and invite prosperity.
Symbolism: The fire acts as an agent that transmits the offering to the divine. The five elements (Pancha Bhoota) are involved, using the fire to connect the practitioner (Jatara-agni) with the spiritual energy (Bhoota-agni).
Components: The ceremony involves a priest (purohit), a fire pit (homam kundam), and specific offerings (dravyams) tailored to the purpose of the rituaal
